I took a stroll on a fragile fantasy. it shivered and cracked Who paved the way with old thoughts? I slipped on a long forgotten plan and turned back The path snaked round the plain And led me back to you Does it help to feel alive? Pressed for time, I passed through fields of idle dreams Tangled in design Tried to stop, to see. to feel But the landscape changed The sky burned red, what was left to gain? We take what we can

about

Faucet Thoughts is a set of 17 improvised / spontaneous compositions for solo piano. The music came about as part of a fundraising project for Médecins Sans Frontières - I ran a half marathon for charity in April 2016, and decided that there had better be some kind of reward for people's pledges.

Almost £1400 was raised, and I promised music for about 50 of the most generous donors.

I recorded 34 pieces over the Summer of 2016, at home and whilst touring with the International Piano Duo. I liked 17 of the pieces enough that I wanted to sequence them into this album. Most of the music was created from improvisation, in one take, with the sounds of yawning pedals and creaky stools creeping in to the mix. A lo fi process, with a Zoom recorder jammed into my Yamaha upright at home, or a baby Grand aboard the SS Aurora as it churned through the sea (this piano had a noticably destroyed high E string, which you'll hear across the album, particularly on Track 13). It was mastered by the masterful Scott Bowley.

The titles came after the music was conceived, and maybe could help to explain something of the narrative of each piece. Subtle electronics help to complete three of the tracks.

This album is available HERE as a special 'pre-release edition' before artwork is completed, (and before I convince Bristol's Howling Owl Records to release it physically) - exclusively to people that donated towards the original fundraiser for Médecins Sans Frontières. I am asking for £3 for the album - which would really help cover the costs of mastering/artwork, and transcribing/learning/performing Faucet Thoughts in future, and all the time that went into creating it. Meanwhile, indivudual tracks, including 17 extra not included on the album, are winging their way into dedicatee's inboxes in the next few days.

Upcoming performance - catch a selection from Faucet Thoughts performed LIVE, at the Others Bar in Stoke Newington, on the 4th December - details to follow.
